Ok so my friend’s been arguing with me about how NHL Trades work. I wanted to finalize this.. so basically how does a trade work in the NHL when dealing with contracts?

Like if I have a player that has 2 years left on his contract and I trade him to a different team, would I pay for the player until his contract ends? Or would the other team pay the contract for me?

From a legal standoint, it’s the contract that is traded, especially in the salary cap world.

There are currently several steps in the trade process
1) 2 or more teams get together to talk trade
2) A trade is agreed upon
3) The NHL holds a call with the management of the teams involved, and the agent(s) representing the player(s)
4) If all is in order (agents have no exceptions, the trading of the contracts doesn’t put one of the teams into salary cap trouble, etc), then the trade is approved by the league.’

Take a look at a website called nhlnumbers.com and look under New Jersey. You will see a cap hit for New Jersey of 2+ million for Ilya Kovalchuk, while his salary is 7+. That is because New Jersey is only responsible for what’s left of the contract…but they’re responsible for the contract nonetheless.

One of the words you hear a lot now at the trade deadline is the word ‘rental’. A ‘rental’ is a player who’s contract ends at the end of the season he’s traded, so the team that receives his contract is only responsible for what’s left for that season which can make trades easier.

But, from a legal perspective, especially in a salary cap environment, it is the contract that is traded (and the player is attached to the contract).

I am new to the stock market and going to do some swing trading. The idea is to buy at the bottom and sell at the top. But this makes me wonder: why would anyone buy from you when it is at the top of a peak and sell to you when it is at the bottom. Will my orders be successful or not?

Because a lot of new investors buy and sell based on emotion, not reason. They think what has happened in the recent past will continue. They see a stock price rise, and without looking at the fundamentals, financial facts (very high price to earnings, sales, book, etc ratios), their emotions say "I missed some of this great rise, and don’t want to miss the rest, I better buy now.
Same with the bottom. This thing has been falling for 6 months. I should have sold at least 3 or 4 months ago when the price was higher. I don’t want to get wiped out. I better sell now.

If you think a stock is going down, sell it….simple as that and make the big boys do that too! No more of this cooperative bouncing the stock between option strike prices to suck the capital out of hard working American’s retirement savings! Lets get the common back in the stock market!

No. Actually the system works great. People who work hard to understand the system can make some extra money and retire early. Others, who want to jump in and expect to get rich without any effort get what they deserve, too.

If you are new to FX start small. On a full contract 25 pips is $250. On a mini lot it’s $25. I can limit my downside to about $15 includin the spread which is why people saying Fx is risky is just plain wrong. Try to limit like that on stocks, options, or futues. Your trading style will determine your risk tolerence , timeframe, lot size,

Thanks in advance

That is an extremely small account to pay someone else to manage. (Small is $100,000 to $500,000). You are not likely to get anyone good or cheap.

It is difficult to defend accounts on a cost basis if they aren’t generating at least $1200 per year in income unless you have thousands of them…so my educated guess is at least 5% per year.

The industry "standard" for basic management is 2% per year for accounts under $1 million and 1% per year for accounts over $1 million. The highest fees on the biggest accounts can be as much as 2% per year plus 20% of profits for the top managers.

Of course if you give up the idea of active management and trading and go with index funds and passive management, you can lower your annual expenses to far less than 1% per year with little net change in average annual return.

I have been invited for an interview to do proprietary stock trading in NY. From what I understand is that I will trade the firm’s capital and they will provide continuous education and tools to trade well. But I know nothing about proprietary trading. Do I trade inside the building side by side with other stock traders or at home? Will I get licensed later on? If you know more details, please share with me. Thank you.

Websters defines Proprietary as;

1 : one that possesses, owns, or holds exclusive right to something; specifically : proprietor 1
2 : something that is used, produced, or marketed under exclusive legal right of the inventor or maker; specifically : a drug (as a patent medicine) that is protected by secrecy, patent, or copyright against free competition as to name, product, composition, or process of manufacture

To me, proprietary stock trading means you are going to be trading the company’s own stock or trading from/with their own portfolio.

It’s unlikely this will be a work at home type gig. You would most likely be on a trading floor of the firm, working with others doing the same or similar things.

Best of luck on the interview!

Knock em’ dead.

TaxCut is now H&R Block at Home. One advantage of using it is if you decide you cannot do it you can go to your local Block office and they can pull what you started. TurboTax doesnt do that.
